Double Foam Chubby

The Double Foam Chubby imitates a big stonefly, hopper, beetle, or general chunky surface meal that trout can spot from below. With two layers of foam, it rides high, floats hard, and looks like the kind of helpless land-or-river bug that deserves immediate investigation.

Fish it in summer, during stonefly or hopper season, in pocket water, riffles, bankside runs, and anywhere trout need a bigger target in broken water. It is also a great dry-dropper fly when you want something buoyant enough to hold up a nymph without sinking like a sad little tortilla chip.

Cast it near banks, seams, foam lines, pocket water, and overhanging grass. Let it drift naturally first, then try a tiny twitch if fish seem interested but not committed. For hopper-style fishing, a little plop near the bank is not a mistake—it is part of the sales pitch.

The double foam body helps it float high and stay visible, even in choppy water or with a dropper tied underneath. That makes it a confidence fly for rough water, fast current, and dry-dropper rigs where smaller dries would tap out early and start questioning their career choices.

Trout are the main target, especially rainbows, browns, cutthroat, and brook trout looking up for larger surface meals. Bass and panfish may also take a swing at it. It is big, visible, buggy, and floaty—the fly-box equivalent of ringing the dinner bell with a foam hammer.
