Zonker Rainbow

The Zonker Rainbow is a streamer built to imitate a small rainbow trout, baitfish, or wounded juvenile fish. It’s the fly you reach for when you’re hunting bigger trout that have graduated from tiny snacks to full-on protein decisions.

It imitates a small trout or minnow with a flashy, fishy profile and plenty of movement. Larger trout often shift toward richer meals like minnows, sculpins, crayfish, and even smaller trout as they grow. A rainbow-colored Zonker gives them that “little fish in the wrong neighborhood” look.

Fish it when trout are chasing baitfish, during higher or slightly stained water, in low light, around undercut banks, pool tails, deep runs, and structure. It’s especially useful when you suspect bigger fish are present but they are not wasting calories sipping specks off the surface.

Use strips, pauses, swings, and occasional twitches to make it look injured or separated from cover. Don’t just rip it straight back every cast. A vulnerable baitfish often darts, stalls, sinks, and struggles—basically the aquatic version of making poor life choices in front of a brown trout.
