What is the Sunken Trico?

The Sunken Trico is a small subsurface mayfly pattern designed for trout feeding on tricos just under the surface. It is especially useful during technical trico hatches when fish are sipping tiny bugs but not fully committing to dries. Redd’s describes tricos as “the little mayfly that produces so many big fish.”

What does the Sunken Trico imitate?

It imitates drowned tricos, spent tricos, and tiny mayflies caught just below the surface film. This makes it a great choice when trout are eating emergers or sunken spinners instead of cleanly taking flies on top.

When should I fish the Sunken Trico?

Fish it during trico hatches and spinner falls, especially in flat water, tailouts, soft seams, slow pools, and other places where trout are sipping carefully. It is a strong option when you see rises but dry flies are getting refused.

How should I fish the Sunken Trico?

Fish it as a dropper behind a visible dry fly, medium dry, or small hopper. Redd’s specifically recommends throwing it under a medium dry or small hopper to target trico sippers.

Why does the Sunken Trico work so well?

Trico-feeding trout can be extremely selective, and many of the insects trout eat sit just below the surface rather than riding high on top. The Sunken Trico gives fish a tiny, vulnerable mayfly profile in the exact zone where picky trout are already feeding.
