What is the Split Case PMD?

The Split Case PMD is a mayfly nymph designed to imitate a Pale Morning Dun that is close to emerging. Redd’s describes it as an excellent representation of a ready-to-emerge PMD nymph, available in sizes 14 and 16.

What does the Split Case PMD imitate?

It imitates Pale Morning Dun nymphs, especially in the pre-emergence stage when the nymph is active and vulnerable below the surface.

When should I fish the Split Case PMD?

Fish it during PMD activity, especially before and during the hatch. Redd’s notes that this fly is especially tough to beat in June and July when PMDs are active.

How should I fish the Split Case PMD?

Fish it under an indicator, as part of a light nymph rig, or as a dropper below a PMD dry fly. Focus on riffles, seams, runs, pool heads, and soft edges where PMD nymphs are drifting or beginning to emerge.

Why does the Split Case PMD work so well?

It matches a highly vulnerable stage of the PMD hatch. When trout are feeding on emerging mayflies below the surface but are not fully committed to dries, the Split Case PMD gives them a natural-looking nymph at the right stage of development.
