Cool little variation on a traditional san juan worm that features an underbody of rubber legs, durable body, and a lucent tungsten bead to help get it down in a hurry.  We use this pattern a bunch during high water, but it also comes in handy when you need a worm dropper for a big dry fly.

FAQs

What is the San Juanito?

The San Juanito is a tungsten worm-style nymph based on the classic San Juan Worm, but with a few upgraded details. It features an underbody of rubber legs, a durable body, and a lucent tungsten bead to help it sink quickly.

What does the San Juanito imitate?

It imitates aquatic worms, annelids, and other small drifting food items that get knocked loose in the current. It is especially effective when trout are feeding on worms after rain, runoff, or rising water.

When should I fish the San Juanito?

Fish it during high water, stained water, runoff, or after rain when worms are more likely to be washed into the river. Redd’s also notes that it works well as a worm dropper under a big dry fly

How should I fish the San Juanito?

Fish it under an indicator, as part of a Euro nymphing rig, or as a dropper below a large dry fly. Let the tungsten bead get it down quickly and drift it near the bottom or through soft seams where trout are feeding.

Why does the San Juanito work so well?

It combines the proven fish-catching profile of a San Juan Worm with extra movement from rubber legs and added sink from the tungsten bead. That makes it a strong choice when trout want an easy, high-calorie meal in faster or off-color water.
