Prince Nymph

The Prince Nymph imitates a wide range of subsurface trout food, including mayfly nymphs, stonefly nymphs, caddis larvae, and general “buggy thing drifting near the bottom” meals. It is more of a proven attractor nymph than an exact insect copy, with enough profile, contrast, and movement to look alive in the drift. Trout may not call it a Prince, but they do recognize it as something worth eating before it escapes the buffet line.

Fish a Prince Nymph when trout are feeding below the surface, especially when there is no obvious hatch or you need a reliable searching nymph. It works well in cold water, fast water, pocket water, riffles, runs, and deeper seams where trout are intercepting drifting food. Aquatic insects spend much of their lives underwater before hatching, so a good nymph pattern earns its keep long before the dry-fly show starts.

The Prince Nymph works best in riffles, runs, pocket water, seams, pool heads, and rocky slots where nymphs naturally drift or get knocked loose. Trout often hold near the bottom in moving water because the current is slower there while food still comes by overhead. Get this fly into that lower feeding lane and let it drift like it belongs there—not like it is sightseeing from the surface.

Fish a Prince Nymph under an indicator, tight-line style, Euro-style, or as part of a two-fly nymph rig. Start with a natural dead drift near the bottom, then adjust your depth until the fly occasionally ticks structure without snagging every cast. It also works well as the larger lead fly with a smaller midge, mayfly nymph, or caddis dropper behind it. That gives trout a big buggy bite and a little snack trailer, because apparently fish also like options.

Carry a Prince Nymph because it is one of the great all-purpose confidence nymphs. It is buggy enough to suggest several common trout foods, visible enough to get attention, and versatile enough for everything from freestone pocket water to tailwater seams. When you do not know exactly what trout are eating but know they are probably eating below the surface, the Prince Nymph is a very good first guess with royal branding.
