Mini Winged Midge

The Mini Winged Midge imitates tiny adult midges and emerging midges sitting in or near the surface film. Midges are small, mosquito-like insects that trout eat year-round, especially when bigger bugs are absent and fish are sipping gently instead of smashing the buffet line. This fly gives you a clean little profile with wings, legs, and just enough “bugginess” to look like the real deal without wearing a neon sign that says fake.

Fish the Mini Winged Midge during midge hatches, slow surface sipping, cold-weather activity, and calm-water situations where trout are eating tiny bugs. Midges can be important in winter, early spring, tailwaters, spring creeks, and still pools because they are often available when mayflies, caddis, and stoneflies are off the clock. When trout are making soft dimples instead of splashy rises, this is the kind of fly that deserves a turn.

The Mini Winged Midge shines in slower water: tailouts, slicks, eddies, spring creeks, ponds, lake edges, and gentle seams where trout have time to inspect small food. Adult and emerging midges often linger near the surface film, and trout feeding on them usually rise smoothly and quietly. Translation: this is not your “chuck it into angry pocket water and hope” fly. It is a precision tool for picky sippers with suspicious little trout brains.

Fish it with a fine tippet, accurate cast, and drag-free drift. Let the fly ride naturally on the surface or just in the film, especially to trout making slow, steady rises. If the current starts pulling the fly faster than the bubbles around it, mend, reposition, or recast. With tiny midge dries, drag is usually the villain. The trout may forgive your hat, your waders, and maybe even your casting stroke—but not a skating midge.

Rainbow, brown, brook, cutthroat, and other trout will eat a Mini Winged Midge when they are keyed on small surface insects. It is especially useful for selective trout in clear, calm, or pressured water where oversized dries get the cold shoulder. Big fish do not always eat big meals; sometimes they park under a seam and sip tiny midges like they are reading the fine print on every one.
