The Balloon Caddis is one of our favorite flies, floats like a cork, easy to see, and can suspend a dropper. This pattern was designed by Roman Moser. Very productive pattern for fast water and riffles. If you ever had a chance to watch Caddis as they float downstream they shiver or skip across the surface film. Try to imitate this motion by jiggling the tip of the fly rod while holding the rod at shoulders height off the water.

The Balloon Caddis is a buoyant, easy to see dry fly for trout feeding on caddis or looking up in broken water. Its floating profile makes it useful during caddis activity, but it can also work as a general searching dry when trout are willing to rise.

This pattern is especially useful in riffles, seams, pocket water, and dry dropper situations where visibility and float matter. It can suspend a small nymph while still giving trout a believable surface target.
