This pattern is TINY. A great BWO imitation and general attractor. Sinks well, but also moves well in the current! This fly produces best in clearer water. This fly works best all year around, but provides the most realistic imitation during the coldest months of the year when blue winged olives are most prevalent.

FAQs

What does the Baby BWO imitate?

The Baby BWO imitates small Blue-Winged Olive mayfly nymphs—those tiny olive bugs trout love to sip, snack on, and generally act fussy about. It’s a good choice when the fish are keyed in on small mayfly life, especially when a plain natural nymph needs just a little extra sparkle to get noticed.

Why does the Baby BWO work so well?

Most BWOs are small, and small flies can disappear fast in moving water. The Baby BWO keeps the right little mayfly profile but adds peacock herl and flash ribbing to help it stand out just enough. It’s still a BWO imitation—not a disco ball with a hook—but it gives trout a cleaner target in the drift.

What makes the Baby BWO different from other BWO patterns?

The peacock herl and flash ribbing give this fly a slightly flashier look than a standard olive nymph. That little bit of shine can be a real advantage when you’re fishing small sizes, deeper lanes, broken water, or pressured fish that need something natural with a wink.

When should I fish the Baby BWO?

Fish it during BWO activity, cloudy days, cooler-water periods, or anytime small olive mayflies are on the menu. It’s also a strong searching nymph when trout are feeding subsurface but not loudly announcing what they’re eating like considerate little gentlemen.

How should I fish the Baby BWO?

Fish it near the bottom with a clean dead drift, either under an indicator, as a dropper, or on a tight-line rig. Because it’s small and has a bit of flash, it’s especially handy behind a heavier anchor fly or paired with a more natural nymph when you want to see which version the trout prefer.
