What does the Hot Head Scud imitate?

The Hot Head Scud imitates a freshwater scud, also called a tiny freshwater shrimp, with a bright hot spot to help trout find it. Scuds are common around weeds, moss, spring creeks, tailwaters, and fertile stillwaters, where trout treat them like little drifting protein snacks.

When should I fish a Hot Head Scud?

Fish it in spring creeks, tailwaters, limestone streams, lakes, ponds, and slow weedy edges where scuds are part of the menu. It is especially useful when trout are feeding near vegetation, along soft seams, or close to the bottom where scuds crawl, swim, and occasionally get knocked loose.

How should I fish the Hot Head Scud?

Dead drift it near the bottom under an indicator, tight-line it through slow seams, or retrieve it slowly in stillwater with short strips or a hand-twist retrieve. Scuds move with quick little jerks, but they also tumble naturally in current, so keep it low and believable.

Why does this scud pattern have a hot head?

The hot head gives trout a small trigger point while the body still keeps a natural scud profile. That little flash of color can help in stained water, deeper lanes, or busy feeding situations where fish need a reason to pick your fly out of the buffet.

What fish will eat a Hot Head Scud?

Trout are the main target, especially rainbows, browns, brook trout, and cutthroat in scud-rich water. It is a great fly when fish are feeding subsurface and you want something small, rich-looking, and just bright enough to cause a tiny underwater mistake.
