What is the Stonefly Stimulator?

The Stonefly Stimulator is a stimulator-style dry fly tied in a Skwala stonefly colorway. It is designed to float well, stay visible, and imitate larger adult stoneflies on the surface. Redd’s carries it in size 8.

What does the Stonefly Stimulator imitate?

It imitates adult stoneflies, especially Skwalas, but it can also work as a general attractor dry when trout are willing to eat a larger surface fly. Skwalas are common on many western streams and are often mistaken for salmonflies.

When should I fish the Stonefly Stimulator?

Fish it in early spring during or shortly after snowmelt when Skwalas are active. It is also a strong choice around rocky banks, riffle edges, pocket water, fast seams, and structure where adult stoneflies may crawl, flutter, or fall onto the water.

How should I fish the Stonefly Stimulator?

Fish it tight to banks, around rocks, along seams, or through broken water with a drag-free drift. When adult stoneflies are active, small twitches or skitters can help imitate a struggling or egg-laying stonefly.

Why does the Stonefly Stimulator work so well?

It combines the buoyancy and visibility of a stimulator with a stonefly profile trout recognize as a big surface meal. It floats well in rough water, can support a light dropper, and gives trout an easy target when larger bugs are on the water.
