Holy Grail - Tungsten

Our take on the Holy Grail adds a green metallic bead to give trout the hint that there is a caddis tucked inside the casing. It has some flash, but it is toned down by the wing casing and partridge feather so the fly still looks natural in the drift. It is not just another standard gold bead nymph that every other angler on the river is throwing.

The Holy Grail - Tungsten is built to imitate a caddis larva or cased caddis, one of the most consistent trout food sources in rivers and creeks across the country. Trout love caddis because they are a meatier, nutrient-rich meal compared to some smaller nymphs that are mostly exoskeleton with not much inside. This fly gives trout that buggy caddis profile with a little extra trigger built in.

The green metallic bead is the secret sauce on this pattern. Caddis larvae often show green tones, and that bead gives trout a little flash of color that suggests something alive underneath the casing. It is bright enough to get noticed, but covered up enough by the rest of the fly that it does not scream “junk fly” as it drifts past a picky trout.

The Holy Grail - Tungsten is a great fly to run in a two-fly nymph rig with a more natural pattern like a Pheasant Tail, Zebra Midge, or subtle Perdigon. The green bead and buggy profile can act like a little underwater billboard, pulling fish over to inspect the rig.
