The partridge soft hackle is one of the oldest patterns in fly fishing. We call these flies wet flies today but on english trout streams in the 1800s these were just flies. We stock these at Redd’s flies over 200 years later because the trout are still chewing on them.

What does the Soft Hackle imitate?
It can imitate emerging mayflies, caddis, drowned adults, small swimming insects, and general buggy subsurface food. The soft hackle fibers create movement that looks like legs, wings, or an insect struggling just below the surface.
When should I fish the Soft Hackle?
Fish it when trout are feeding just under the surface, flashing mid-column, eating emergers, or refusing dry flies. Soft hackles are especially useful during mayfly and caddis activity, in riffles, soft seams, tailouts, and slower runs.
How should I fish the Soft Hackle?
Fish it dead-drifted, swung across current, lifted at the end of the drift, or trailed behind a dry fly. A slow swing or gentle rise can imitate an insect emerging toward the surface.
Why does the Soft Hackle work so well?
It looks alive with very little movement from the angler. The sparse profile, natural drift, and pulsing hackle make it a subtle, lifelike option when trout are eating subsurface insects but not fully rising on top.
