X Caddis

The X Caddis is a dry fly used to imitate an adult or emerging caddis sitting low in the surface film. It’s a great choice when trout are feeding on caddis but won’t quite commit to a high-riding, heavily hackled dry. In other words, it’s for those fish that are eating just confidently enough to annoy you.

The X Caddis imitates a caddis during that vulnerable transition from pupa to adult. Caddis pupae swim toward the surface before emerging, and the new adults often ride, twitch, or struggle on the surface before flying away. That low-riding profile and trailing shuck help suggest a bug that is almost airborne—but not quite lucky enough.

Fish the X Caddis during caddis hatches, especially when you see splashy rises, quick slurps, or trout working seams and riffles for emerging adults. It can be especially useful in the evening, along current edges, below riffles, and anywhere caddis are popping off or skittering around like they forgot how wings work.

Start with a drag-free drift so the fly looks like a natural caddis riding in the film. If trout are chasing active adults, add a tiny twitch, skate, or lift at the end of the drift. Caddis fishing often rewards a little motion, but keep it believable—more nervous bug, less caffeinated squirrel.

An Elk Hair Caddis usually rides higher and is great for rougher water or skating adult caddis. The X Caddis sits lower and has a trailing shuck, making it better when trout are keyed on emergers or crippled caddis trapped in the surface film. Keep both in the box: one rides proud, the other looks vulnerable.
