Mini Chubby

The Mini Chubby imitates a small hopper, stonefly adult, caddis-ish attractor, or general buggy terrestrial that looks worth eating from below. It is not trying to be one exact insect under a microscope. It is a compact floating meal with enough shape, legs, and attitude to pull trout up.

Fish the Mini Chubby in late spring, summer, and early fall when terrestrials and adult stoneflies are in play, or anytime you need a visible searching dry. Terrestrials like hoppers, ants, beetles, and crickets become trout food when they fall, jump, or get blown into the water.

The reference material recommends using a visible, buoyant terrestrial dry as the top fly with a sunken terrestrial or nymph below it when trout may be feeding both on top and underneath.

Cast it along banks, foam lines, pocket water, riffle edges, and seams, then let it drift naturally. A soft plop can help sell the terrestrial story, but do not cannonball it unless you are trying to alert trout in the next county. If fish are aggressive, a tiny twitch can make the legs kick and trigger a look.
