You have flashy flies and flies that just flat out catch fish. This one is the latter. Works great also off the back of a dry fly to imitate a fly stuck in the film. You would be surprised how often you think fish are eating dries but in reality, they are eating just below the surface.

Barrs Emerger is a proven emerger pattern for trout feeding during mayfly activity. It imitates the vulnerable stage when insects are transitioning toward the surface and are easy for trout to intercept.

This fly is useful during PMD, BWO, baetis, and general mayfly hatches when trout are feeding just under the surface or refusing adult dries. It works in tailouts, riffles, seams, slicks, and soft edges.

Fish it behind a dry fly, under a small indicator, or as part of a light nymph rig. It is a strong choice when trout are rising but not fully taking flies on top.

FAQs

What does Barr's Emerger imitate?

Barr's Emerger imitates a mayfly transitioning from nymph to adult as it rises toward the surface. Trout often target this vulnerable stage because emerging insects cannot escape quickly.

Why fish Barr's Emerger when trout appear to be rising?

Rises do not always mean trout are eating fully emerged adults. Fish may be taking emergers just below or in the surface film, making this pattern useful when dry flies are being ignored.

How should I rig Barr's Emerger?

Fish it behind a dry fly, under a small indicator, or as the upper fly in a light nymph rig. Keep the presentation delicate and adjust depth so it passes through the upper part of the feeding lane.

When and where should I fish Barr's Emerger?

Use it during PMD, BWO, Baetis, and general mayfly activity in tailouts, riffles, seams, slicks, and soft edges. It is especially valuable when insects are emerging but few adults are remaining on the surface.

Which Barr's Emerger variant should I choose?

Choose the size 16 PMD version for pale morning dun activity and the size 18 BWO version for smaller olive mayflies. Match the dominant mayfly and the size trout are currently eating.
